How this calculation works
The tip is calculated on the entered bill. The total is split equally; service charges and tax must already be included if you want them in the calculation.
Per person = bill × (1 + tip ÷ 100) ÷ peopleA worked example
A ₹2,000 bill with a 10% tip split between 4 people is ₹550 each.
Good to know
Uses the stated formula and assumptions. Displayed decimal values are rounded; use consistent units for all inputs.
A rounded share can leave a small remainder
Divide a total equally among three people and the exact per-person amount may contain repeating decimals. Three displayed shares rounded to paise can differ from the total by a paise. That is a display-rounding issue, not a change in the underlying bill.
For a real settlement, agree how to allocate any remainder or round the final payment consistently. The tool gives an equal mathematical share and does not assign different items or contributions to individual people.
Decide what belongs in the tip basis
The entered bill is the amount to which the percentage is applied. If it includes service charges or tax, the calculation applies the tip percentage to those amounts too. Enter a different basis if your situation calls for one.
A service charge and a voluntary tip are different items. Check the actual bill and applicable terms before adding another percentage. This calculator does not decide whether an additional payment is required or appropriate.
A few questions, answered
Can I use a zero tip?
Yes. The bill is then divided equally without an additional tip.
Can people pay unequal shares?
This tool assumes an equal split. An item-by-item or weighted split needs a different calculation.
