Check your understanding

Does this prove uniform illumination?

No, only a maintained-average lumen budget is computed.

Why can grid count exceed minimum count?

A complete rectangle can need extra fixtures after count rounding.

Behind the numbers

How this calculation works

Use effective maintained lumens per fixture to find a minimum whole count. Choose a complete aspect-ratio-based rectangular grid and show its actual count, spacing, average estimate and connected load.

THE FORMULAMinimum fixtures = ceil(area × target lux / (fixture lumens × utilization × maintenance)); complete grid may round further

A worked example

A 24 m² room at 300 lux needs 7,200 effective lumens. A 3,000 lm fixture with 0.6 utilization and 0.8 maintenance contributes 1,440 lm, so the minimum is five; the complete schematic grid contains six.

Good to know

Average-lumen budget only, not certified photometry or safe electrical installation advice. Does not model beam patterns, mounting height, glare, uniformity, supports, daylight or emergency lighting.

Lux is lumens per square metre

The average target multiplied by floor area gives the modeled maintained luminous requirement. Fixture lumens are then reduced by the two explicitly entered factors before count rounding.

Watts are reported as a separate connected load. They do not directly replace fixture lumens because different fixtures can turn the same electrical input into different light output.

The panel fastener spacing coordinate calculator adds generate unique setback-perimeter fastener coordinates and an independent interior grid from entered maximum spacing, without choosing structural values.

Minimum count and complete grid can differ

The mathematical minimum is rounded to a whole fixture. A complete rectangular grid may need additional fixtures so every row has the same number of columns.

The chosen grid uses room aspect ratio as a simple layout heuristic. It does not optimize beam overlap, mounting constraints, task locations or visual comfort.

An average does not demonstrate uniformity

The displayed average divides effective maintained lumens by room area. It does not calculate the darkest point, a minimum-to-average ratio or glare at a viewer’s position.

Use product photometric information and appropriate design checks when an actual lighting specification is needed. The defaults illustrate arithmetic and are not a recommended target for a particular task.

Use the result with the next measurement

The panel fastener spacing coordinate calculator plots points from maximum-gap rules. It does not share this page’s lumen budget or imply that fixture locations and fastener positions follow the same design constraints.

A few questions, answered

Does this prove uniform illumination?

No, only a maintained-average lumen budget is computed.

Why can grid count exceed minimum count?
