How this calculation works
A grid uses identical starting positions in every row. The running-bond option starts alternate rows with a half paver, then continues full-width cells and joint gaps. That shift can change how many clipped cells occur at the far edge.
Count row cells including clipped edges; alternate running-bond rows begin with half a paver; each cell consumes one full pieceA worked example
A 3 × 4 metre rectangle with 200 × 100 mm pavers and 5 mm gaps needs fifteen cells across and thirty-nine rows in the grid model, or 585 pieces before reserve. Ten percent reserve rounds to 644 pieces.
Good to know
Rectangular uniform grid or alternate half-paver rows only. All clipped cells consume full pavers; no offcut reuse, border, herringbone, curves, drainage or installation compliance.

Pattern changes the boundary pieces
A grid uses identical starting positions in every row. The running-bond option starts alternate rows with a half paver, then continues full-width cells and joint gaps. That shift can change how many clipped cells occur at the far edge.
Every clipped cell consumes a whole purchased paver in this model. Offcuts are not paired or reused between rows. The result therefore describes the stated unshared-cut layout, not an optimized site cutting plan.
The Drywall sheet grid layout and reserve calculator counts clipped boundary cells in a separate panel-covering problem. Pavers additionally use joint spacing and an optional alternating row offset.
Joints affect the repeating module
A row of pavers has gaps between pieces, so the module is larger than the paver alone. The formula includes one fewer joint than piece count when checking total coverage. Enter joint width in millimetres to match the paver dimensions.
The site dimensions are metres and are converted explicitly before layout. Confusing those two input units can change counts by orders of magnitude. Verify orientation because the width and length labels determine which direction the half-paver shift follows.
Area division is only a lower-bound comparison
The area-only number ignores boundary cutting. It is shown to explain why an edge-aware layout can require more purchased pieces than dividing site area by a repeating module. Do not use the lower bound as an installation quantity.
A border course, herringbone pattern, curve or drainage requirement needs its own layout. The reserve percentage is a user allowance for purchase, not a structural or installation standard. Apply the actual paver system’s requirements before ordering.
Work through the example
A 3 × 4 metre rectangle with 200 × 100 mm pavers and 5 mm gaps needs fifteen cells across and thirty-nine rows in the grid model, or 585 pieces before reserve. Ten percent reserve rounds to 644 pieces.
Use the worked table to trace where each input enters. Then change one assumption and calculate again, leaving the others fixed. A comparison is easier to interpret when the change has one identifiable cause rather than a different set of measurements, dates and rates all at once.
What this model does not establish
Rectangular uniform grid or alternate half-paver rows only. All clipped cells consume full pavers; no offcut reuse, border, herringbone, curves, drainage or installation compliance.
Keep the input assumptions with any exported result. Illustrative values do not become observations merely because the output is precise. For a real purchase, financial reconciliation or technical decision, check the underlying records and applicable requirements before treating this scenario as a final answer.
A few questions, answered
What formula does the calculator use?
Count row cells including clipped edges; alternate running-bond rows begin with half a paver; each cell consumes one full piece
What should I verify before using this result?
Rectangular uniform grid or alternate half-paver rows only. All clipped cells consume full pavers; no offcut reuse, border, herringbone, curves, drainage or installation compliance.
Are the example inputs live records?
No. They are an illustrative calculation case. Replace them with records and measurements appropriate to your situation.
