2Methodology
The Flesch-Kincaid readability tests are readability tests designed to indicate how difficult a passage in English is to understand. There are two tests: the Flesch Reading Ease, and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level. Although they use the same core measures (word length and sentence length), they have different weighting factors.
Formulas
Reading Ease = 206.835 – (1.015 × ASL) – (84.6 × ASW)
Grade Level = (0.39 × ASL) + (11.8 × ASW) – 15.59
Where ASL = Average Sentence Length and ASW = Average Syllables per Word.
3Interpretation of Scores
The result is a number that corresponds to a U.S. school grade level or a score between 0 and 100.
- 90-100: Very Easy (5th Grade level)
- 60-70: Standard (8th-9th Grade level)
- 0-30: Very Confusing (College graduate level)
For Search Engine Optimization (SEO), higher conversion rates, and general web accessibility, a Reading Ease score between 60 and 70 is generally considered optimal.

Does this tool store data?
No. This utility operates entirely within the client-side browser environment. No text data is transmitted to external servers.
Why are short sentences preferred?
Short sentences reduce cognitive load on the reader. Complex sentence structures often require the reader to retain information in working memory for longer periods, increasing the difficulty of comprehension.
