Understanding Global Sizing Systems
Footwear sizing presents a complex, non-standardized challenge for international consumers. Unlike units of mass or distance, shoe sizing systems often rely on historical or arbitrary scales, leading to significant variations even between adjacent countries. The primary global systems are derived from two core measurement standards: the French “Paris Point” and the English “Barleycorn.” These systems are adapted for local markets, resulting in the European (EU), United States (US), and United Kingdom (UK) sizes.
The MondoPoint Standard (CM)
MondoPoint is the only truly international and logical system, standardized in ISO 9407. This system is the length of the foot in millimeters (or, for common reference, centimeters). The size number directly corresponds to the foot length, ensuring absolute clarity regarding the intended wearer’s foot dimension. It is frequently employed by military and technical footwear brands globally and is considered the most accurate basis for cross-system conversion.
Reference Conversion Chart
The table below provides a typical cross-reference chart for major systems, based on industry averages and the MondoPoint (CM) measurement. Note that US women’s sizes are generally one full size larger than the equivalent UK size and approximately one-and-a-half sizes larger than the US men’s size for the same physical foot length.
