The Importance of Pitch Factor

The Roof Pitch (or slope) is crucial for accurate material ordering. A simple length-times-width calculation only gives you the flat area covered by the building footprint. However, the actual surface area of a pitched roof is always greater. Therefore, our roofing calculator tool uses a specific pitch multiplier to accurately determine the true surface area, ensuring you order enough material for the angled slopes.

Why the Shingle Estimator Includes a Waste Factor

When calculating the required shingle bundles, our system automatically adds a 10% waste factor. This percentage is a standard industry practice to account for unavoidable material loss from cutting shingles to fit around edges, hips, valleys, and for errors during installation. Furthermore, if your roof has complex features (many hips, valleys, or dormers), professionals often recommend increasing this waste factor to 15% or even 20% to be safe. For this reason, it’s always better to have a few extra bundles than run short in the middle of a job.

While our Roofing Material Calculator defaults to three bundles per square, which is standard for most 3-tab asphalt shingles, remember that architectural or designer shingles (laminates) are heavier and sometimes packaged differently.
