Difference Between HSN & SAC
While both codes serve the purpose of classification for taxation, they apply to different categories of supply.
- HSN Code: Stands for Harmonized System of Nomenclature. It is an internationally accepted coding system used for classifying Goods (e.g., Electronics, Food, Machinery).
- SAC Code: Stands for Services Accounting Code. It is exclusively used for classifying Services (e.g., Legal consultancy, Construction, IT services). All SAC codes in India typically begin with the number 99.
Understanding Code Structure
The length of the HSN code depends on the turnover of the business and the nature of the trade (Export/Import).
| Digits | Applicability |
|---|---|
| 4 Digits | Mandatory for taxpayers with turnover > ₹5 Crore. |
| 6 Digits | Optional for turnover > ₹5 Crore; Mandatory for Export/Import. |
| 8 Digits | Used for very specific classification in Customs/Exports. |
